Pericles increased the number of public officials who were paid on salaries
Direct democracy- a form of government when the citizens rule directly and not through a representative
Athenians and Spartans go to war
Peloponnesian war Athens had the stronger navy and Sparta had the stronger army and the location of the war meant it could not easily be fought on sea.
Pericles plan was to bring the fight out to the sea so he could strike
In the second year of the war disaster struck as Athens had a plague that killed 1/3 of the population, including Pericles
Sparta gained Victory
in 415 B.C Athens sent a army more than 20,000 soldiers to the island of Sicily, they planned to to destroy one of Sparta wealthiest allies, Syracuse
