Rule and order in Greek City - states
By 750 B.C. the polis was the fundamental political unit in ancient Greece.
Most city states controlled 50-500 square miles of territory
Tyrants seize power
were looked at as leaders who would work for the interests of ordinary people
The first step of democracy in Athens was when a noble man took power, Draco
made death a punishment for almost every crime
Sparta builds a military state
Located in southern Greece
725 B.C. Sparta conquered neighboring region of messenia
Spartas government had several branches
An assembly,  elected officials, the council of elders
Persian wars- Battle at Marathon (between Greece and the Persian empire)
