Definitions
Republic. - a state in which supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives, and which has an elected or nominated president rather than a monarch.
Patrician. - an aristocrat or nobleman.
Plebeian. - a commoner.
Tribune. - an official in ancient Rome chosen by the plebeians to protect their interests.
Consul. - an official appointed by a government to live in a foreign city and protect and promote the government's citizens and interests there.
Senate. - the smaller upper assembly in the US Congress, most US states, France, and other countries.
Dictator. - a ruler with total power over a country, typically one who has obtained control by force.
Legion. - a unit of 3,000–6,000 men in the ancient Roman army.
Punic Wars.- the three wars waged by Rome against Carthage, 264–241, 218–201, and 149–146 b.c., resulting in the destruction of Carthage and the annexation of its territory by Rome.
Hannibal.- general who commanded the Carthaginian army in the second Punic War; crossed the Alps and defeated the Romans but was recalled to defend Carthage and was defeated
