Rome was a Republic that was made up of Plebians and Patricians. The Plebians were the common people and Patricians were wealthy group that had all the power. The Plebians got tired of being ruled unfairly so they elected representatives called the Tribunes. They helped protect the Plebian's rights and that started Roman Law. The Plebians demanded that the laws be written down so that the Patricians couldn't make up laws. They made the Twelve Tablets.They had the laws written on them and they were on public display. This gave the Plebians protection of the law and more rights. This started the legal system that we still use today.
